New and Upcoming

Just a quick update today about new classes and exciting upcoming events!

NEW Classes for November!

The tiny powerful computers we carry around in our pockets and purses are a miracle. In the past, it took a room full of huge machines to get the same power we now have in our phones. These tools are amazing. Amazingly frustrating! While there are so many things we can use our phones for, every new bell and whistle has a learning curve. Then, just when you think you have it figured out, there’s an update and everything changes! And all you really wanted to do is make a call.

Wallah! Crista Switzer to the rescue! This Finishing School alumni owns abcd TECH, a company that offers support and one-on-one training to help adults eliminate anxiety and embrace technology to navigate phones and computers with confidence. Crista recently became one of my business coaching clients, and as I’ve learned more about how she helps people, I’m excited to tap into her expertise to offer this new class. I’ve had several requests for classes on how to outsmart our phones, and now I’ve found the perfect person.

We’re still working on the content, so if there’s anything that’s been vexing you, reply to this email and let me know so we can add it to the class. So far, we’re planning to cover how to customize your phone settings so you control the experience, like when and how it dings and sends you notifications. We’ll show you things that will make your life easier, like how to back up you phone to keep the content from disappearing, set up email, and download apps. We’ll also give you our favorite easy hacks to make your phone tech life easier.

When my good friend Sharon died unexpectedly in July, I learned a valuable lesson. I need to get my affairs in order. She was retired and lived by herself, and over the weekend had a health emergency. It wasn’t until Sunday evening, when she didn’t show up to meet our friends at a concert, that anyone realized something might be wrong. The police helped them get into her house and found her in critical condition. (Here’s the memorial I wrote to her.) No one knew where her health directives were or if she had a durable power of attorney to designate who made medical decisions for her. Until it all got sorted out, it was tough on everyone. It was a wake-up call for me, and I promised myself I would take care of this important issue this year.

Attorney and master mediator Trip Shawver has offered many times to come to the Finishing School to co teach classes on legal issues. This seemed like another great fit. Trip has lots of great tips for us on what we need to consider, how to best protect our assets, and how to make the documents official. We’ll cover how to organize important papers, make a will, Advanced directives (DNR), Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care and other important decisions. If you don’t already have this paperwork ready, or it’s been a minute since you have, this class will get it done. This year.

Upcoming Events!

Besties!

For the past three years, Lucinda’s Old Town and the Finishing School for Modern Women have put on a Besties: Fashion for a Purpose fundraiser for Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center. This is a fun evening to celebrate the influence of our “besties” while raising money to help local assault survivors. Pairs and trios of best friends show off Lucinda’s fun fashions, along with hair and makeup by Charisma Inner Beauty. Yours truly is the Mistress of Ceremonies. We have raffle prizes for you to win, donated from local businesses.

This year, the event is on Saturday, November 3, at Harvester Arts, 215 N. Washington. Doors open at 6:45. Program starts at 7 and wraps up around 8. Tickets are $20 each, or $30 for you and your bestie to come together, and will be available next week at the Finishing School, Lucinda’s, and Charisma Inner Beauty. We’ll have delicious treats from Kocktail Kupcakes and other local chefs, adult beverages, and other fun surprises. This is so much fun! Put it on your calendar now!

We’re still looking for models. If you’re interested in modeling with your best friend, email Lucinda’s at lucindasict@gmail.com.

Are you registered to vote?

Did you know women fought for 72 years to get the right to vote? The least we can do to uphold their legacy is to vote! We have until Tuesday, October 16 to register and here's a link to register online.

Not sure where the candidates stand? Need a ride to the polling place? Need an alternative, like getting your ballot by mail? Check out this past blog post to learn more!

Looking forward to seeing you soon!
