Meet the Panelists for Gone Phishing: Protecting Yourself from Fraud Panel Discussion

About the event: Seven out of 10 adults have been in the crosshairs of scams within the past year, dodging an average of three shady schemes every single week! Falling for scams has zilch to do with your smarts—it's all about those crafty scammers manipulating emotions and pulling heartstrings.


Dive into our eye-opening panel discussion to learn the ropes on dodging scams, spotting fraudsters, and what to do if you find yourself tangled in their phishing lines.


This event is open to the public, and everyone is welcome.


The registration fee is $10 at the door or in advance.

We are meeting at Flying Pig Improv at 3203 E. Douglas Ave. from 6 to 8 PM.

Avery M. Elofsson – Chief Attorney, Office of the District Attorney for Sedgwick County


Avery Elofsson is the Chief of the Economic Crimes Unit for the Office of the District Attorney. He has been with the District Attorney’s Office since 2008. He handles complex litigations such as data breaches, frauds, piracy, counterfeit, elder abuse, multi-defendant cases, and homicides. In 2016, Avery was put in charge of the Consumer Protection Division for the Office where he was responsible for all civil litigation, settlements, and public relations. After building up the division and obtaining over two million dollars in judgments. Avery returned to full-time criminal prosecution in 2021.

 

Avery has prosecuted nearly 1,700 matters, made well over 3,100 court appearances, and tried over 50 felony cases. Avery graduated law school in 2008 from Chicago-Kent, where he received the Dean’s Distinguished Public Service Award and was both he Student Bar Association’s (Evening Division) Vice President and the Hispanic Law Student Association’s President. Avery works throughout the community by presenting on public safety issues, such as elder abuse, and is also on the F. A. S. T. team.

 



Julie Hopkins, AARP Executive Council, Frand and Scam Task Force Volunteer


Julie Hopkins currently serves on the AARP Executive Council and on the AARP Fraud and Scam Task Force. She retired from Information Technology and Project Management positions and worked at Koch Industries for 15 years and at the Credit Union of America. Julie has a Bachelor's in Business Management from Friends University. She is also a certified Project Management Professional and has a Green Belt in Six Sigma. Julie has many personal stories to share about fraud and scams. If you can spot a scam, you can stop a scam.

Jill D. Miller is passionate about helping people grow – professionally and personally. Her consulting company, Creative Solutions, has helped fledgling and seasoned entrepreneurs launch and grow out-of-the-ordinary and sometimes quirky ventures since 1998. Jill found her gift for teaching as a corporate trainer and loves influencing young minds as an adjunct professor of Entrepreneurship in the Arts at Wichita State University.

As Headmistress of the Finishing School for Modern Women, Jill has worked with thousands of women, inspiring them to overcome obstacles and move toward their goals. She founded the Badass Women of Wichita Alliance in 2021 with weekly gatherings to build community, promote nonprofits, and develop “badassery.”

After writing a blog for the Finishing School for seven years, Jill was inspired to compile her favorites into her first book, “Never Finished: Practical advice for Modern Women to inspire your fierce, authentic self she published in October 2022.

Active in the Wichita community, Jill leads cultural and women's organizations and is a zealous volunteer. In her spare time, she likes to attend artistic events and relax at home with her miniature rescue poodle, Jack.
