Meet the Panelists for Taking Care of the Girls: Breast Health Panel Discussion

Thanks to these badass women for agreeing to be on our Taking Care of the Girls: Breast Health Panel Discussion on October 30, 2024, at Flying Pig Improv's new location at Douglas and Grove in Wichita, Kansas.

About the event: In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our October panel will focus our discussion on breast cancer awareness and prevention of the disease that affects 2.3 million women worldwide. Approximately 13% (about one in eight) of U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer in the course of their life, and those rates have increased slightly by 0.5% per year. Breast cancer is still one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in U.S. women, second only to lung cancer. This disease doesn’t affect only women. U.S. men make up 1 of every 100 breast cancer diagnoses in the country.

Our panel discussion will feature experts and survivors who will share information on breast health, the latest practices for detecting and preventing breast cancer, treatment options, reconstruction, and other important considerations that are often overlooked.

This event is open to the public, and everyone is welcome.

The registration fee is $10 at the door or in advance.

We are meeting at Flying Pig Improv's new location at Douglas Ave. and Grove, 6 to 8 PM.

Elizabeth Hotaling

Advocate, Aesthetic Flat Closure (AFC)

Elizabeth Hotaling is a passionate advocate and survivor of breast cancer, diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ, estrogen positive, and HER2 positive in May 2018. Facing her diagnosis head-on, Elizabeth chose to undergo a double mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction using implants. Her treatment journey included 12 weeks of chemotherapy and a year of infused Herceptin.

For the first three years, Elizabeth focused on battling the disease and managing the side effects of treatment, which ultimately led to the removal of her implants and the transition to an Aesthetic Flat Closure (AFC). In the past three years, she has dedicated herself to embracing her new breastless body and advocating for the AFC option.

While Co-Director of Stand Tall AFC, Elizabeth worked tirelessly to raise awareness and support for others navigating similar journeys. Her experiences and insights have made her a valuable voice in the breast cancer community, inspiring resilience and acceptance.

During her schooling, she identified a lack of physical therapy support for patients who have or are survivors of cancer and who often have significant mobility or functional limitations after their treatment. Catelin realized that this is a patient group she is passionate about helping because every one of them is fighting for a reason, and no one should have to fight alone.

Since then, she has graduated from Duke University Health System’s Oncologic Residency, where she became a Certified Lymphedema Therapist, completed her first Herman and Wallace pelvic floor course, and received additional training in Cognitive Behavioral Informed Therapy to provide holistic care for her patients. She treats a wide variety of cancer-related conditions, including lymphedema, cancer-related fatigue, post-mastectomy/lumpectomy care, and pelvic floor dysfunction.
